Riversdale Historical Society

The Riversdale Historical Society is Riversdale's volunteer support group organization. The Society raises political and financial support to restore the house and fund interpretation projects. The Society trains the docents who conduct house tours and operate the Museum Shop, which features distinctive books, gifts, and toys--perfect for holiday shopping or special gift.

Summer Newsletter Highlights

  • Historic Day at Riversdale: On May 16, four generations of Calvert descendants celebrated at Riversdale--the largest gathering of Calverts in over a generation. Caroline Calvert's great-great-grandson Francis Key Murray presented the Riversdale Historical Society with a silver cup that had been given to Caroline as a wedding present. William Lescure, another descendant, presented the society with a catalog of paintings from Henri Stier's art collection, and several books, eight of which were written by George Henry Calvert.
  • Restoration initiatives--many new projects are taking place, including restoration of the Salon and the installation of a green geothermal HVAC system. See our restoration blog.
  • Local students visit Riversdale--Riversdale Elementary School's first and fifth grades made their second annual field trip to Riversdale. The first grade played historic games, toured the house, learned to dance, and made historic toys. The fifth grade learned what the house servants and slaves did, and the types of crops and plants grown at Riversdale, played games and learned how to play hoops and to stilt.
